I recently made the decision to rehaul my skin care routine. I wanted to find products a bit more high end than I had been using - after all, I’d been using the same products since college. And I wanted to ensure I was treating my skin really well now that I was heading into my mid-30s. Plus, I wanted to find a brand that did a bit of good for the world and not just my complexion.
In my research I came across Novara, a brand that takes a different approach than any skin care brand I had seen before. I was really inspired by the founder’s story. After struggling with depression and even attempting suicide, Reshona Jessamy found comfort and support in an unlikely place: skincare rituals from around the world. As a result of her depression and anxiety, she began to deal with skin issues (who among us doesn’t understand the frustration of stress-induced breakouts and other skin challenges?). But the upside was that she fell in love with formulating skincare.
“Nourishing my outer layer as I nurtured my inner world helped me find both peace and purpose,” said Jessamy. This resonated with me so much - during Covid I also developed anxiety (who didn’t?) and found comfort in a multi step skin care routine. Taking the time to nourish my skin felt like one of the few things I could count on when things felt so uncertain. I loved that Jessamy wanted to find a way to combine her passion for skincare with a way to help other women that might be struggling with mental health issues, and took action to launch Novara.
I’m a big believer in putting your money where your mouth is, so the fact that a big percentage of profits (20%!) goes to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was a big selling point for me. Combine that with the fact that the products pull from the best of skincare traditions and ingredients from all around the world, and I was sold. I decided to place an order for the Ultra Hydrating Cream. It promised to hydrate, condition, and nourish skin with clean ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Centella Asiatica Extract, and Prickly Pear plant extract that enhance collagen production, lock in moisture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
When my order arrived, I was really impressed with the beautiful packaging, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that each box comes with unique positive affirmations on inspiring sayings. It was a nice reminder of the brand’s ethos and its focus on supporting those dealing with depression and anxiety.
Using the Hydrating Cream was a great experience. The jar was beautiful and felt like a true luxury item. And I loved the texture of the cream itself. It’s really lightweight, but incredibly moisturizing. I noticed after just a few uses that my skin felt hydrated and supple throughout the day, unlike in the past when my skin would feel dry after just a few hours and I’d need to reapply moisturizer. After using the product for a few weeks, I noticed bigger changes as well. My skin was brighter, redness was reduced, and the lines on my forehead and around my eyes looked less pronounced.
Using Novara felt like the perfect blend of self-care and social responsibility. I loved treating myself to something that made me look and feel good. And I was really happy to be able to support a brand with such a great message. If you’re looking for high performing skincare that actually does good in the world, definitely give Novara a try. I’ve expanded my collection to include the Illuminating Serum and Purifying Cleanser. I’ve officially graduated past my college skincare routine and I couldn’t be happier about it.
