This Brand Claims It Can Extend Your Skin’s Lifespan

As a woman in my mid-thirties, I get ads for all sorts of anti-aging products and treatments directed my way on a daily basis. Whether it’s anti-wrinkle serums or eye creams, injectables or lasers, I (along with probably every woman between 30 and 70) have seen it all. At some point, most of it just starts to blend together, but every once in a while I come across a brand or a product that really captures my attention. And when that happens, I start doing my research. (I made some unfortunate knee-jerk purchases when I was young and naïve.) Now, I want to know about the products I’m buying, especially when it comes to my skin and health.

One brand I recently came across that piqued my interest was OneSkin, a “longevity company” that works to promote long-term skin health by extending your skin’s lifespan, or “skinspan.” I had read a number of positive reviews on their OS-01 Topical Supplement, and I wanted to learn more. After going down an internet rabbit hole, here’s what I found out.

  1. OneSkin truly is science-backed. Where many “science-backed” skincare brands are run by marketing teams who outsource their scientific research to external labs, OneSkin was created by 5 PhDs who perform all research and development in-house, and who adhere to a rigorous scientific methodology throughout all phases of development. (Oh, and those 5 PhDs? All women. Gotta love that.)

  2. The brand’s proprietary peptide, OS-O1, is the first ingredient to target the root causes of skin aging. It acts at the molecular level to reverse your skin's biological age by improving skin barrier, supporting DNA damage repair, and preventing the accumulation of senescent cells. Senescent cells are one of the main drivers of skin aging, and can negatively impact overall health. In layman’s terms, they are damaged cells that don’t die off when they should, and instead stick around and release pro-aging signals to their neighboring healthy cells. The National Institute on Aging describes it like this: “Like the one moldy piece of fruit that corrupts the entire bowl, a relatively small number of senescent cells can persist and damage neighboring cells.” The OS-01 peptide is able to prevent the accumulation of these cells. (1.That sounds like something I’d like to get my hands on. 2. I blame cellular senescence for that internet rabbit hole I mentioned earlier.)

  3. OneSkin focuses on healthy aging over anti-aging. Aging happens. But that doesn’t need to be a negative. For me, it’s a breath of fresh air to find a company in this space that’s not promising to make me look 25 forever (or telling me that’s the ideal). Their goal is to make your skin stronger and healthier - and a positive byproduct is that stronger, healthier skin also happens to look better. OneSkin takes a holistic approach, going deeper to improve the internal markers of skin health rather than just focusing on the surface.

  4. They use clean ingredients. When I think of science-backed products, I tend to think of bubbling flasks and caustic smells. But OneSkin’s Topical Supplement can be classified as a clean beauty product. EWG (Environmental Working Group) rates ingredients on a scale of 1-10, with a score of 1 being the safest and healthiest. OneSkin’s OS-01 received an average score of 1.08 and a weighted average of 1.02. That’s a rating I definitely feel comfortable with.

After spending so much time researching OneSkin, I decided to place an order. It should arrive in the next few days and I’m excited to give it a try, but I’m not expecting immediate results. As the brand says, skin health is a marathon, not a sprint. I plan on incorporating the Topical Supplement into my current daily routine and monitoring my fine lines, evenness, and elasticity over the next 12 weeks or so. I’ll be sure to report back with the results.
