As a fitness enthusiast (or some might say “fanatic”), my diet is always top of mind. I’m extremely careful with my carb intake and making sure that I’m hitting my macros. For a long time, my diet consisted mainly of eggs, salmon, berries, grilled chicken, broccoli, cottage cheese, and Greek yogurt. And while that helped me to maintain the fitness level and physical appearance I want, it quickly got boring. I definitely missed some (a lot) of the food I’d indulged in during college and my early 20s. Pasta, potatoes, and most of all bread and bagels. I didn’t understand how there wasn’t a healthier option for these foods that actually tasted like the real thing.
Then one day I was talking to a friend after spin class who mentioned having bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel for breakfast. “Cheat day, huh?” I asked her. She laughed and said, “No, actually, you’ve got to try these bagels I found recently.” She then proceeded to tell me about a brand called BetterBrand - a low carb, high protein option that, he said, actually tasted like the real thing. I was skeptical - any type of keto-friendly breads I’d tried in the past were fine, but it was very clear they were keto-friendly. My friend was raving about this one though, so I decided to give it a try.
I ordered an 8 pack of “The Classic.” I figured that would give me the best idea of the product. Nothing to distract from the texture and taste. When they arrived, I was impressed with the packaging. Very sleek and stylish. But I was even more impressed by the nutritional content of the bagels. Each Better Bagel has 90% less carbs than a traditional bagel - about the same amount as in two banana slices. They also have as much protein as four eggs and the same amount of sugar as a single celery stick. Plus, Better Bagels are non-GMO verified and plant-based. This all sounded great to me. I also loved that BetterBrand, the company that makes The Better Bagel, is female and AAPI-owned and founded.
When I went to try my first Better Bagel, I was careful not to get my hopes up. I really wanted it to be delicious, but I didn’t think that something so healthy actually would be. I decided to toast it and just add butter. I’m a purist, what can I say? When I took my first bite, I won’t lie, I was sort of in shock. It wasn’t an exact replica of a fresh-out-of-the-oven bagel shop bagel - but it was pretty damn close. Just the right amount of crispiness on the outside and sponginess on the inside. It was delicious.
Was this the solution to my monotonous diet? I decided to order the Variety pack, which includes all the flavors - Original, Everything, Cinnamon, and Chocolate Chip. The perfect mix of savory and sweet. When they arrived, I went on a kick and started to incorporate the Better Bagels into my diet in a variety of ways to spice things up. For breakfast, I did avocado and egg on The Classic or smoked salmon on The Everything. For lunch, I’d add turkey, hummus, and veggies or tuna salad. And if I felt like dessert, I could have The Cinnamon or The Chocolate Chip with butter and keto cinnamon sugar.
I was officially hooked. And I signed up for the subscribe & save option on the website so that my freezer would always be stocked. For anyone on a Keto or low carb diet, The Better Bagel is a must-have option for those days when a bagel craving hits. I’ve said goodbye to my boring diet without sacrificing my fitness goals.
