I consider myself to be something of a bagel connoisseur. Growing up in New York, bagels on the weekend were non-negotiable. I remember getting up early and lining up at our favorite bagel place for lox and cream cheese on an everything bagel. That delicious chewy texture. That savory flavor. Nothing could beat it. It was something that I craved every weekend, and it was a tradition that we never skipped.
As I got older, I still looked forward to my weekend bagels, but I started feeling guilty about them. All my friends were transitioning over to fruit and granola, egg white omelets and the like. Even though my diet was really healthy on the whole, I felt ashamed for indulging on the weekend - like I was irresponsible or didn’t care about my health. I just wanted the freedom to enjoy the delicious treats I had grown up with, but the guilt was taking the fun out of it. Perhaps, I thought, there was a healthier way to get my bagel fix.
After some research, I came across BetterBrand, a food technology company that wants to create a better future of food. One in which we have the freedom to experience pleasure and feel good about it. Starting with The Better Bagel, they transformed the most carb-heavy foods into the least. I was intrigued, but I didn’t believe it could be anything like the original. I was imagining those 100 Calorie Packs from the early aughts. Fewer calories, for sure. And less flavor and less enjoyment. I assumed that The Better Bagel would be just like this.
But I felt like I had to give it a try. After all, food science has come a long way in the past 20 years. I ordered a pack of the Everything Better Bagels to see if they could come close to my weekend indulgence. When they arrived, I was impressed by the amount of seasoning on them - definitely no scrimping there. The nutritional facts were also impressive. Each bagel has 90% less carbs than a traditional bagel - about the same amount as in two banana slices. They also have as much protein as four eggs and the same amount of sugar as a single celery stick. This was definitely a snack I wouldn’t feel guilty about. But was it one I’d enjoy? It was time to put it to the test.
I decided to try to recreate my lox and cream cheese order. I popped the bagel in the toaster (they come frozen, so this is a must) and after letting it toast for a few minutes, added the toppings. The moment of truth had arrived. I tried not to get my hopes up and took a bite. To my delight, it tasted delicious! The texture was similar to a bagel from a shop - maybe a little chewier, but it was completely fine for me. And the taste of the bagel and the seasoning were great. It definitely did not seem like a healthified version of my favorite indulgence. I was officially a Better Bagel convert, and I immediately signed up for their subscription plan. Next, I’ll be trying the Cinnamon Toast flavor for a sweet treat. If it’s anywhere near as good as the Everything Bagel, it’s going to become my new go-to dessert.
I love that BetterBrand is changing the game and offering guilt-free foods that you can indulge in and enjoy. It also helps that the Better Bagel is delicious and super close to a traditional bagel in flavor and texture. If you’re looking to make your breakfast routine healthier and tastier, The Better Bagel was made for you. Order them today - you won’t be disappointed.
